Trippy
The Outing Club is one of Colby's most popular clubs, and here are some of the club's most popular trips.
Sugarloaf
As one of the most popular skiing spots in all of New England, Sugarloaf is (no surprise) a favorite destination of Mules. The Outing Club runs telemark ski clinics there, open to anyone in the Colby community. Students of all skiing and boarding abilities are so enticed by Sugarloaf’s 138 trails that they bestow upon it the rare distinction of something worth waking up early for on a Saturday.
Outing Club Cabin
Though not a trip per se, spending the night at the Outing Club’s lakefront cabin is definitely an adventure. On Great Pond in Belgrade, it’s just 20 minutes from campus and a great place to hang out and relax with friends. In warmer months students swim and kayak, and in the winter they ski and snowshoe across the frozen lake. Any member of the club can rent the cabin and, as Sarah Stevens ’09 puts it, “experience the Maine way of life.”
Katahdin
Located in Baxter State Park, this is the highest peak in the mountainous state of Maine and a favorite hiking spot among students. Every fall about 80 outdoor aficionados make the three-hour trek north with the Colby Outing Club to hike one of the many trails to the 5,267-foot peak. “Everyone gets super psyched for that,” said Outing Club officer Sarah Stevens ’09.
Cadillac Mountain
Hiking Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park has become something of a bragging
right. From October through March, the sun hits Cadillac before anywhere else in the country. Enthusiastic Outing Clubbers camp in the park, then wake up at 3 a.m. and hike in the dark. With only their headlamps to guide them, students hit the summit at sunrise and can proudly say they were the first to see the sun.
