A Colby Outing Club kayak roll clinic
Colby Outing Club (COC) Co-Presidents James Cryan ’07 and Miriam Trotscha ’07 report an unusually busy semester. “The club has really stepped it up and is providing, on average, double the amount of trips and outdoor clinics [offered in previous years],” said Cryan.
Between kayak roll clinics, nordic ski lessons, ice climbing trips, and even avalanche training courses, it’s hard to find a day of the week without a COC event. Cryan attributes the recent rise in the number of trips to an increasingly skilled and motivated group of trip leaders and a boom in interest from the Colby community.
While Cryan and Trotscha are pleased by the campus interest, both worry that the increase in club membership and trip numbers will strain the COC’s ability to provide gear. As a result, they recently persuaded Student Government Association Treasurer Michael “Kip” Kiprop ’07 to allocate discretionary funds to help out. More snowshoes, telemark skis and boots, and ice climbing equipment are some of the purchases that will help the club respond to the snowballing interest.
