While the term "spring break" conjures up images of beaches and parties, there are alternatives ways to spend spring break. Every year the Colby Outing Club (COC) sponsors spring break camping trips around the country. This year COC offered a climbing trip in Joshua Tree and two backpacking trips in Utah. I had the privilege of joining the backpacking trip in Canyonlands and Arches National Parks with six other students. We drove from Denver to Moab, Utah, where we feasted on the famous "Mother Of All Burritos" (note the brilliant acronym) and spent the night. The next couple of days were spent in Arches National Park on day hikes to Double Arch, Landscape Arch, and Delicate Arch (featured on the Utah license plate).

From Arches we drove to Canyonlands National Park for more seculded hikes. On our first day we hiked in Island in the Sky, descending canyons, crossing valleys, hiking through dried up river bends, across fresh snow patches, and back up a steep canyon side. The last three days we went backpacking in the Needles district. Many a swell time was had on this section. We protected the cryptobiotic soil from destruction, explored the towering rock features, and enjoyed tasty meals and great company. All the while we were surrounded by beautiful desert scenery.
